MEP/Piping/HVAC

Mechanical Engineering
Merrick’s mechanical engineering services include mechanical equipment, piping, fire protection, utilities, and services systems. The firm’s engineers and designers are experienced in the design and specification of mechanical equipment systems including standard mechanical equipment such as pumps, fans, heat exchangers, filters, housings, chillers, vacuum pumps, and scrubbers. Project teams also have design expertise for custom items such as vacuum chambers, supporting high vacuum systems, pressure vessels, cryogenic systems, and piping systems. Merrick’s personnel are experienced with engineering calculations including ASME vessel design calculations for wall thickness, pressure head design, weld design, and nozzle reinforcement. Merrick also performs throughput calculations for flow, pressure drop and pump speed, heat transfer, and motor sizing load calculations.

Electrical Engineering
Merrick’s background in electrical engineering includes power, lighting, control, and special systems. In addition to electrical design, project teams have performed inspections and/or gathering of field data for studies and reports. Among the firm’s services in electrical power distribution are system loads flow and short circuit analysis, system logic and control schematics, emergency power generation design, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) design, low and high voltage distribution (both overhead and underground), low- and high-voltage substation design, and system protection and coordination (circuit breakers, relays, and fuses).

Structural Engineering
Merrick’s structural engineering staff is experienced in seismic analysis and design of new structures and modifications to existing structures, foundation systems, bridges, and industrial material handling facilities. Project teams are particularly skilled in designing foundation systems for a variety of soil conditions and accommodating vibration such as from large rotating equipment. Team members have significant experience in steel, cast-in-place concrete, and composite design.

Piping Design
Merrick offers extensive in-house capability for accomplishing process piping design work. The experience of piping design staff includes the application of ANSI B31.1, B31.3, and B31.8 criteria. Merrick’s ongoing commercial work within the oil and gas, power generation, and utility industries keeps the piping design staff current with the latest codes and standards. Project teams have experience in double containment plastic (PVDF and PVC) piping systems, conventional welded-steel systems, and a double-containment piping system for liquids removal and treatment at a Superfund site.

Merrick has designed low-level radioactive liquid waste (LLRLW) piping systems at DOE sites, which also required double containment and leak detection systems. Team members have considerable experience with fluid piping systems for utility distribution at industrial facilities, processing plants, and facility support systems. The firm’s experienced metallurgical and welding engineers have designed systems for handling a wide variety of highly corrosive fluids and gases including process acid wastes from chemical/nuclear reprocessing systems.

HVAC Design
Merrick’s capabilities and services in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) design and engineering range from the normal day-to-day requirements for building systems within offices, training operations facilities, and industrial and warehouse applications to the highly complex needs of high containment laboratories, the handling of radioactive materials, and the specialized research equipment and systems for reactor and accelerator research facilities. The design of steam and hot water heating systems, central cooling and heating plants, active hydronic systems, direct/indirect evaporative cooling systems, HEPA filtration systems, and air solar systems are also a part of the firm’s extensive resume.

In the specialized arena of nuclear material process facilities, Merrick’s staff has prepared conceptual Title I and Title II design for HVAC systems, including sophisticated three-zone cascading systems for ensuring contamination control and confinement. This experience includes clean room systems for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and microelectronic industries, and nuclear power plant designs and nuclear materials facilities. The firm is highly experienced in the practical application of ASHRAE standards and compliance with DOE 6430.1A and ERDA 76-21 including preparation of Energy Conservation Reports.
