Merrick and its clients have successfully responded to virtually all departments within the Federal government as well as many state agencies, municipalities, utilities and private firms.
Project Management Plan Development
Development of a comprehensive project management plan is crucial to the success of a project and it’s one of the first deliverables that Merrick provides clients on complex projects. Key sections of a plan include:
- Project management approach
- Work breakdown structure
- Baseline cost and schedule estimates
- Organization and staffing plan
- Quality plan
- Change control plan
- Scope, schedule, and cost management
- Risk management
Process Licensing
Merrick assists clients in the licensing of new processes or technologies around which they can build their business or enhance their technology portfolio.
Front-End-Loading (FEL) Analysis
Front end loading (FEL) is a term used to describe the up-front design, modeling and engineering work necessary to properly define a process or system. The FEL stage is of a project is the one in which Merrick can have the greatest positive impact on the overall success of a project. FEL typically includes Aspen modeling.
Site Identification & Selection
Merrick assists its clients in indentifying and selecting the best available site for their projects. Site evaluation can include obtaining geotechnical reports and evaluating topography, utilities, and permitting issues, among other things.
Pilot and Commercial Demonstration Plant Design
Stepping from lab-scale to pilot and commercial demonstration scales of a technology can be a very challenging task. Merrick is an expert at determining the for scale-up size that will result in the greatest likelihood of success of the project and then providing the conceptual and detailed design engineering necessary for implementation.
Plant Design, Engineering & Commissioning
Merrick offers full-service process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, and civil design and engineering services to its clients. We are also expert at commissioning the equipment, systems and plants that we design.
Lab Testing Management
Merrick works closely with private and national laboratories on projects that require research and development of their systems and/or techniques. We can develop and manage a full set of testing protocols necessary to verify the function of a technology or process.
Procurement
Merrick performs the construction cost estimating and comprehensive procurement effort for clients on design/build projects, major equipment (mechanical, electrical and instrumentation), custom fabrication, building systems, electrical substations, consulting and construction subcontracts for engineer/design, procurement, and construction management.
Project Management & Construction Management
Merrick employs over forty full time, highly trained and skilled project managers who ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. Merrick personnel can also manage the construction effort on projects ranging in size from the very small to full-scale commercial deployments.
Operator Training & Start-Up Assistance
We routinely develop and write operator training manuals and follow up with hands-on operator field training for systems and processes we design and engineer.
Commercialization Plans & Execution
One of Merrick’s particular expertise’ is providing expert assistance in the commercialization of new, biofuels technologies. We have broad and deep experience in taking biofuels processes from lab scale through pilot, pre-commercial and commercial scale development. Employing an experienced and expert firm such as Merrick is the key to successful commercialization of a developing biofuels process.

Wind/Solar Energy
With a 55-year history in energy and transmission, Merrick has continued to build its focus on renewable energy. For the past 15 years, Merrick has been involved in biofuels and, as the renewables market has grown in wind, we’ve expanded our services to meet those demands. The firm’s wind energy team is led by Matt West, who with the Merrick team, brings a strong resume to our clients. A sampling of the team’s work includes light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data collection and processing for a 432-square-mile wind farm in Baja, project design and management for several projects for Horizon Wind Energy, design of multiple substations for Empire Electric Association, and surveying and LiDAR services for multiple transmission corridors for Xcel Energy.
